THISMONTH’S ISSUE

U

K fragrance enthusiast Lizzie Ostrom’s book

Perfume: A Century of Scents

is a tour-de-

force history of iconic and long-forgotten

perfumes. Ostrom’s breezy writing style

offers little gems about your favourite scents:

In the 1980s there were signs in prominent restaurants that

read “No smoking or Giorgio (Giorgio Beverly Hills perfume)”

There are more than 50 different fragrances under the

Salvador Dali name. And Estée Lauder Company’s Aramis

was named after a character in

The Three Musketeers

.

But it is her hilarious tales about Angelique’s Black Satin

fragrance in 1946 that make the book a worthwhile read.

The company, whose headquarters resided on Skunk Lane

in Wilton, Connecticut, was the brainchild of two American

executives Charles N. Granville and N. Lee Swartout. They

saw perfumery as a way to get rich quick and felt no publicity

stunt was too over-the-top. They would descend into towns

throughout America and literally spray perfume into the

city streets. It was delivered in the form of a gigantic Easter

egg lowered from a helicopter. On another occasion, they

hired 12 pin-up models and placed them in planes which

circled above Los Angeles. Each plane dropped a cloud

of perfume over the city. Unfortunately, they had failed

to take into account the thick smog covering the city so

no perfume made it to the ground. The stories are laugh-

out-loud funny. Thankfully, the fragrance launches this

month aren’t accompanied by such stunts.

Summer makeup collections debut this month and you’ll see

some of our favourites. You might want to add a pop of orange

to your makeup case, as it will instantly update your look as

we head into summer. And I have an interview with Giorgio

Armani’s perfumer. She’s a fascinating individual. I hope you

enjoy this issue.

Best wishes,

Dave
